Troubleshooting with Posts

In this article, we will cover:

As a multi-channel brand, your community thrives on visual social proof. However, you may occasionally notice that specific Instagram posts are missing from your TrueLoyal dashboard or appear as text-only.

Because TrueLoyal (TrueLoyal.com) relies on official API integrations to aggregate User-Generated Content (UGC), certain platform restrictions on Instagram's side can prevent content from flowing into your feeds. Below is a comprehensive guide to why content may be missing and how to resolve these issues.

Common Reasons for Missing or Incomplete Content

Understanding the technical limitations of social media APIs can help you manage your content boards more effectively. Here are the primary reasons posts may not appear:

Advertising and Boosted Posts

If a post has been boosted, classified as an ad, or has an advertisement attached, Instagram will not send it through to TrueLoyal.

  • Persistent Flags: Even if the ad campaign has ended and is no longer visible to the public, the post remains flagged as "advertising content."

  • Post-Ingestion Changes: If a post is boosted after it has already landed on your TrueLoyal board, it may revert to a text-only format as the media URL becomes restricted.

Account Authorization and Feed Status

  • Expired Authorization: To maintain security, Instagram account authorizations occasionally expire. Once you re-authorize, Instagram only allows TrueLoyal to pull the last 24 hours of content for hashtag feeds. For branded content, we can retrieve up to the last 250 posts.

  • Paused Feeds: If a feed was manually paused and later reactivated, content posted during the "down period" may have missed the capture window.

  • Feed Refresh Required: Occasionally, a feed connection may break independently of account authorization. These instances typically require a manual "push" or refresh from the TrueLoyal support team.

Copyright and Privacy Restrictions

  • Copyright Flags: Instagram may flag media for copyright issues (often due to licensed music). When this happens, Instagram ceases to provide the media_url to third-party platforms. This can result in a post appearing as a blank image or disappearing entirely from your board.

  • Privacy Settings: If a user’s account is private, or if they switch a public post to private/hidden after it was posted, TrueLoyal cannot display that content. This also applies if a user deletes their account.

  • Shadow Bans: If a user’s account has been "shadow-banned" by Instagram, their content is often restricted from being distributed via the API to third-party tools.

Metadata and Tagging Limitations

  • Late Hashtags/Mentions: Instagram only sends the initial version of a post to the API. If a user edits their caption to add a hashtag or @mention after the post has been published, TrueLoyal will not receive an update to pull that content in.

Platform and API Functionality

Occasionally, missing content is the result of broader technical shifts:

  • API/Webhook Issues: Changes to Instagram’s platform functionality or server-side issues can prevent data packets from reaching our system.

  • Data Time-outs: As platform requirements evolve over time, older content may "time out" and no longer be retrievable via the current API structure.

Recommended Workaround: Comment Mentions

If a specific piece of content is missing and does not fall under the "Ad/Boosted" category, you can attempt the following:

  1. Set up a Comment Mentions Feed: Add a "Comment Mentions" feed to your TrueLoyal board.

  2. Tag Your Brand: Go to the desired post on Instagram and @mention your brand's account in a comment.

  3. Sync: This often triggers the API to recognize the post and pull it into your editor.

Note: If the post still does not appear after attempting a comment mention, it is a definitive sign that Instagram is not making that specific content available to third-party platforms.
