Activities Configuration

In this article, we will cover:

What are program activities?

Program activities are the actions your members are rewarded with points for, such as creating an account, making a purchase or celebrating their birthday. They are normally set up to encourage engagement with your brand.

Where can I find the activity settings?

Go to Loyalty >> Program Settings >> Activities.

From here, you can edit the built-in activities, create custom and form activities, and switch any activity on or off using its toggle.

Activities in Program Settings

You can also change the order activities appear in on the member dashboard. Click on Reorder Activities for Members, drag and drop the activities into the order you would like, then click Save.

How to reorder activities for members

Which built-in activities are available?

Built-in activities are already part of the TrueLoyal platform, so they don't need any additional setup on your side. Each one is described below, along with any extra configuration fields it has.

Account Creation

Switch this activity on to award points to members for enrolling in the loyalty program. Unless you have set your program up for explicit opt-in, enrolling in the program is the same as creating an account on your site.

Purchase on Website

This is the main activity for most loyalty programs, as it lets members earn points for their purchases. This activity does not have any additional configuration fields.

Birthday Bonus

This activity rewards members with bonus points on their birthday. The birthday is collected in the member dashboard. This activity does not have any additional configuration fields.

Refer a Friend

This activity awards points to members when a friend they referred creates an account and completes a purchase. For more details, see Refer a Friend Activity.

Winback Bonus

This activity is aimed at your inactive members. It gives them an incentive to come back and make a purchase soon. For more details, see Winback Bonus.

This activity encourages members to share on Facebook. Points are not awarded when the member shares, but when someone clicks on the shared post. This is to follow Facebook's sharing policy and to prevent abuse through posts that only the member can see. This activity does not have any additional configuration fields.

This activity encourages members to share on Twitter. Points are not awarded when the member shares, but when someone clicks on the tweet. This activity does not have any additional configuration fields.

This activity encourages members to share on Pinterest. Points are not awarded when the member shares, but when someone clicks on the shared pin. This is to follow Pinterest's sharing policy and to prevent abuse through pins that only the member can see. This activity does not have any additional configuration fields.

Form Activity

You can reward your members for filling out a form, for example a survey, a quiz, a profile question or a product feedback form. The form is built in Form Builder and then embedded in the activity, so it shows in the member dashboard and points are awarded when the member submits it.

Note: You will need to create and publish your form in Form Builder first. See Form Builder for how to build a form.

  1. Go to Loyalty, Program Settings and then Activities
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click on Create Form Activity on the Form Activity card
  3. In the Settings tab, choose the Approval Type:
Immediately - points are awarded as soon as the form is submitted
Manually - points are held until you approve them
After a fixed duration - points are awarded after a set period of time
  4. Under Embed Form, select your form from the dropdown. If you have just created the form and can't see it, click on Refresh Form List. You can also click on Create New Form to go straight to Form Builder
  5. Click Save
  6. In the Text Configuration tab, you can change what your members see, such as the Display Name, Description, Earn Points Text, Notification Text and Thank You Text, for each language
  7. In the Manage Rules tab, you can change the points awarded. By default, the Default Rule awards 100 points and an exclusion rule means a member can only earn points for the form once in a lifetime
  8. Switch the activity on using the toggle at the top of the page when you are ready for it to go live

How to create a Form Activity - Loyalty

Please note that clicking on Create Form Activity creates the activity straight away, switched off. If you change your mind, open the activity and click Delete.

Configuring activities

Every activity, whether it is built-in, custom or a form activity, is set up in two parts. Click on Edit on the activity and you will find these in the tabs at the top:

  • Settings - the basic settings for the activity
  • Manage Rules - the rules for how many points are awarded

The Text Configuration tab lets you change the text your members see for the activity. To learn more about language customisation, see Setting up a multi-language reward program.

Basic settings

The screenshot below shows the default fields in the Settings tab. Some built-in activities have extra fields here, which are covered in the built-in activities section above.

Activity Settings tab

  • Approval Type: Points can be awarded Immediately, Manually or After a fixed duration. With the last two options, the points transaction shows up for approval, where you can approve or reject it.
  • Enable Expiry Override: This lets an activity use a different expiry period from your global point expiration settings. Tick the box, select the expiry period and click Save. To find out more, see Point Expiration.
  • Activity Tile Image and Activity Icon Image: Add the URL of an image or click Upload to change the images shown in the member dashboard.
  • Activity ID: This can't be edited for built-in activities. For custom activities, this is the ID you use in the API call (see Configuring a custom activity).
  • Show Activity in User Dashboard: Choose whether this activity is shown in the member dashboard or hidden.

Activity rules

TrueLoyal has a rule engine that lets you set rules and exceptions for awarding points on each activity. These are set up in the Manage Rules tab of the activity.

Every activity has a Default Rule, which sets the points awarded. It always applies unless it is overridden by an exclusion rule. To change the default points, click on Edit, update the value and click Save.

Default Rule in Manage Rules

To add another rule, click on Add Rule. Each rule is made up of:

  • Rule Name: A name so you can recognise the rule.
  • Match All / Match Any: Whether all of the conditions have to be met, or just one of them.
  • Conditions: Click on Add condition, choose a category (for example Number of Purchases), then choose the operator (for example Greater Than) and enter the value. Click Done. You can add as many conditions as you need.
  • Action: Click on Add Action to choose what happens when the conditions are met (see Rule actions).

Click Save when you are done.

The parts of an activity rule

Note: When none of your rules apply, the default points are awarded. If you don't want members to be awarded any points when no rules apply, please contact your Customer Success Manager or Technical Support at support@trueloyal.com.

Rule actions

These are the actions you can choose from when you click on Add Action:

  • Award points as a multiple of the default rule: The default points are multiplied when the conditions are met, for example 2x bonus points.
  • Do not award points: No points are awarded when the conditions are met. This is an exclusion rule.
  • Award fixed points: A fixed number of points is awarded when the conditions are met.
  • Update an attribute: A member attribute is updated when the conditions are met.
  • Assign a conditional tier: A member is moved into a Conditional tier when the conditions are met.

To cap how many times a member can earn points for an activity, add a Frequency condition (for example Frequency is greater than 1 times in a lifetime) with the Do not award points action. Once the limit is reached, no more points are awarded for that activity.

Configuring a custom activity

A custom activity is one that doesn't happen through the TrueLoyal platform, but that you would still like to reward members for. As long as you can track the activity on your side, TrueLoyal can award points for it.

To set up a custom activity, go to Loyalty >> Program Settings >> Activities, scroll to the bottom and click on Create Activity on the Custom Activity card. The setup is the same as the other activities, so add the basic settings and then the rules.

Custom Activity card

To award points, you can either make a real-time call using TrueLoyal's Loyalty API, or upload a file at the end of each day for batch processing. See Custom Activity Integration via Batch Mode for more details.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding configuring activities, please don't hesitate to contact Technical Support at support@trueloyal.com.
